CJ-5 Budget Build Phase 2

We're back and deeper into our CJ-5 build. Lots more progress has been made and we're staying on track. Still being in the prepping stages means alot of time has to be put in getting parts ready for use. Grinding, cutting and fitting have to be done slowly and carefully so measurements are correct. We've had to take our time during this phase because building a Jeep starts from the ground up. Let's get into what we have been doing in and around the shop.

Parts Removal

From our 1970 CJ-5 frame we removed the following:

      * clutch and brake pedal

      * steering box

      * drag link assembly

     * upper shock mounts on the front

Using the Torch

We picked up a TJ front snout at a local junkyard and will be using it for some donor parts. We removed the upper spring brackets from its frame using a torch to be used on our CJ-5 later. These brackets did not want to come off! They had been welded on really well and this caused more time for their removal than anticipated. In the end I got them off without damaging them. Taking a little more time to remove parts is worth while to avoid damage or even destruction to the parts you want!

The front spring brackets from the TJ are bowed because its frame is bowed. Our CJ-5 frame is straight so I notched the upper brackets to fit flat against our CJ frame. The notches were cut out with a sawsall then ground down flat. Using the TJ brackets instead of custom fabricating some allow us to use aftermarket Jeep parts in the future, ensuring they should fit.

The remainder of my time was spend cleaning up the parts , grinding cuts down flat and ensuring my measurements were correct.

Front Suspension - More Progress

We accomplished more work on the front suspension. Take a look.

Lower control arms. The big one is the right small left.                  Bushings in place to be welded.
Both do not have front solid bushings welded on yet or
threaded inserts for hymed joints at opposite end.

Headers vs Manifold - All about the clearance

The engine was lowered into the frame to load the springs to check height. We checked the exhaust manifold clearance and found there was none. They pointed to the chassis and would not work. After going to a local swap meet we picked up some headers and brought them back to the shop. The headers cleared perfectly and solved our problem, and with little money spent! Note: these are Edelbrok headers and we got them for only $40.00!
